Caio Marques – Cidade vazia

(For immediate release, march, 3, 2009)

The Brazilian singer-songwriter Caio Marques is about to release his second solo album: Cidade Vazia. Following the same line of his first work - Caio Marques (2006) -  but improved, the EP Cidade Vazia will be entirely available for free dowload in the artist’s website in april.

Rap, Hip Hop, samba, bossa nova and folk rock harmonies are some of the elements in Caio Marques’ unique sound. He has released his debut in 2006 , a 10 song affair that ought not to be missed. He recorded and mixed it at home, but its musical quality surpasses any technical limitations, which perhaps have even played an important part in the making of this truly masterpiece of modern Brazilian music. The song “Desista” became a hit in brazilian’s independent scene, and was included in the UK compilation “Nova Musica do Brasil” (2007).

Caio Marques, 36, has studied classical guitar since he was a kid, but his childhood soundtrack was old school samba from the 30s, 40s and 50s, while in his teens he played and listened to pop, rock, punk, post punk and folk. All this information can be detected in his musical projects, starting at the end of the 80s. In 1989, he formed with the bass player Guto Gevaerd the band Frutos Madurinhos do Amor, an intelligent and often humorous take on the São Paulo vanguard scene of the time, which included artists such as Rumo, Itamar Assunção and Arrigo Barnabé. By then, he was already flirting with hip hop and rap, and tried to make musical connections with it. Frutos Madurinhos had many different formations and rarely played live, but is considered in Curitiba – where he has always lived – to be a legendary act. Frutos disbanded in 2004.

In 1996, Caio formed Gente Boa da Melhor Qualidade, a band devoted to old school samba standards and b-sides from Adoniran Barbosa, Noel Rosa, Geraldo Pereira, Cartola, Nelson Cavaquinho and others. The band is still active and its shows are a hit in south Brazil. Six years later, he formed with Guto Gevaerd, Cassiano Fagundes, André Scheinkmann and JC Branco the band Bad Folks (which is the opposite of Gente Boa in English). Bad Folks is a very active outfit in the Brazilian independent scene and famous for its freak-punk-folk-rock sound. They released three EPs, a video produced in New York, played in different cities in Brazil and in Spain. With Bad Folks he released the EP Bad Folks(2003) and the full-length LP Impossible (2008).

Caio capitalized on everything he has done musically and as a writer and started to compose songs with lyrics full of delusion, bohemia and nightlife stories. Those themes have been popular in Brazilian pop music since the beginning of the 20th century, after all. Caio’s sound thrives with it: instead of reproducing western and globalized musical genres and styles, he combines them with his country’s traditions and his own personality to create something different, unusual but accessible. Listen to it with attention; it will be a worthwhile experience.
